Warriors claim superb road victory over Sutton

Sheffield Spartans v Whitley Warriors, NIHL Div 1 North, Ice Sheffield, 4 October 2014

Whitley Warriors travelled down to Ice Sheffield on Saturday afternoon (3.45pm face off) to take on the Sutton Sting in a NIHL North Division 1 encounter. Warriors took a strong roster on their travels as Whitley’s roster comprised of 17 skaters plus 2 goaltenders. Sting came into the game in fine form as Sutton beat the Billingham Stars 8-1 in their last match up on home ice.

Warriors started the game on the front foot and went infront after just 3 minutes of play when teenage forward Callum Queenan found the back of the net after being set up nicely by experienced forward DJ Good.

Whitley continued to impress during the 2nd stanza of action and Warriors increased their lead on 24 minutes when DJ Good applied the finish after some pleasing build up play from the lively Queenan and Callum Watson. Later in the middle period of play Warriors made it 3-0 when the in form Alex Lawson was able to light the lamp.

The game’s final goal came after 50 minutes of play when Dean Holland made it 4-0 in Warriors favour when he fired home unassisted. Whitley were able to shut out Sutton and Warriors Man of the Match unsurprisingly went to netminder Richie Lawson who was able to save every shot that came his way during the 60 minutes of hockey.

Warriors are in action again next weekend when Simon Leach’s side head across the border to take on the Solway Sharks in Dumfries on Saturday night (November 29th, face off 7pm). Whitley’s next home game is on Sunday December 14th when Warriors face their local rivals the Billingham Stars in what is sure to be a feisty Tyne Tees derby at Hillheads ice rink in Whitley Bay.
