Whitley Warriors are delighted to announce the re-signing of 23-year-old defenceman Matty McDonald.

Previous to stepping up to senior level hockey in 2021, McDonald divided his ice time between the Under 18s and Under 20s from 2016 to 2018 and was made captain of the former in his second campaign, scoring 14 goals and 9 assists in 18 league games to finish the season as his side’s fourth highest points scorer.

McDonald then played two further seasons for the under 20s and captained the team in his 2019-20 campaign during which he contributed 5 points in 13 league games. In his first season for Whitley Warriors, he impressed the coaches and fans alike and was rewarded for his efforts by receiving the Most Improved Player award for 2021-22. A strong second season followed as he cemented his position as a safe pair of hands on the blue line.

“I can’t wait to get back in training for the upcoming season,” McDonald said. “Having Tony as coach is exciting and gives us every chance of pushing on from last season.”

“Matty is another product of the junior system and he made a huge contribution last season,” said Head Coach Tony Hand. “We expect the same from him this year.”
