Frankie Sherwood is a local three year old boy. In May 2015, he was diagnosed with stage four high risk neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer.
Fewer than 100 children in the UK are diagnosed each year with neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a cancer of specialised nerve cells called neural crest cells. These cells are involved in the development of the nervous system and other tissues.
Most children who get this cancer are younger than five years old. Even if a child is subsequently clear of the cancer, there is an 80% chance of relapse, with a 50% survival rate.
Frankie endured weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. He had ten days of treatment left when he relapsed. His family are trying to raise £550,000 to take Frankie to the USA for antibody treatment.
[Tweet “On 2 October, north east ice hockey is raising money for @SaveFrankie #FillTheRinkForFrankie”]On Sunday 2 October 2016, north east ice hockey will come together to raise as much money as possible for Frankie’s fund. Whitley Warriors will play local rivals Billingham Stars in a derby game that faces off at 5pm at Whitley Bay Ice Rink. There’ll be a bucket collection at the game – please donate as much as you can afford for this worthy cause. We’re hoping to have Frankie at the game to perform a ceremonial puck drop but this will depend on his health.
