Warriors youngsters Ben Richards and Callum Read are currently in Dumfries, Scotland playing for Great Britain in the World Championships at under 18 level. Whitley coach Simon Leach is also part of the GB set up as the Warriors head coach is assistant coach for the GB under 18’s.
To date GB have gone down to 2 defeats in the tournament losing out to Holland in the opening game by 6 goals to 4 before suffering another narrow defeat in their 2nd game of the championship when they loss out to Korea by 6 goals to 5. However with 3 games still remaining in the round robin tournament Britain could still have a successful championship if they can lift their form.
Despite GB’s defeats Whitley winger Ben Richards has been able to impress as the teenage forward has been able to pick up a point and an assist in Britain’s 2 competitive games. Ben has been able to record a plus/minus rating of plus 1 and has also been recorded as having 4 shots on goal. Warriors other representative in the Championships Callum Read has seen some shifts in defence for GB however the reliable young blue liner is yet to register a point for his country in his first 2 outings.
GB are next in action this (Thursday) evening when Britain take on Romania. Like Britain Romania are yet to win a match up however the Romanians sit just above GB in the standings as they picked up a point in the opening game of the group when they took their game against Korea to penalty shots after the tie ended level after regulation and overtime.
Britain then have a well earned day off on Friday before taking on Croatia on Saturday and ending the championships with a tie against the current group leaders Lithuania on Sunday. I’m sure everyone connected with Warriors would like to wish Ben and Callum all the best for their remaining games for their country in the Championships.
