Whitley Warriors are delighted to announce that netminder Richie Lawson has returned to their line-up for the remainder of the 2021-22 campaign.

After working his way through Sunderland’s junior ranks to make his senior debut with the Chiefs in the English National League in 2004, Lawson went on to play for both Newcastle’s ENL and Elite League outfits, achieving a shutout in his first appearance for the Vipers’ EIHL side. Here, he played three further seasons before signing for the Northern Stars in 2010. Lawson then made the switch to Whitley Warriors in the season that followed and quickly became a fan favourite, most recently enjoying league success in the side’s 2019-20 campaign during which he recorded a save percentage of 91.8%.

“After missing the first few weeks of the season due to other commitments, we are delighted to welcome back Richie and have him available for selection,” General Manager Paul Matthews said yesterday. “It’s a huge boost for the squad and gives us great competition for places within our netminding department. Richie has been back in training over the last three weeks and his vast experience without question will help the younger goalies learn from him and improve their own games. We want all our netminders working together in training and pushing each other to be selected for the games. I’m sure the fans will be excited to see Richie back.”

Lawson will be available to play for the Warriors this weekend and will make his return on Saturday evening against the Scimitars in Sheffield. His #35 shirts will be available to sponsor.

Welcome back, Richie!
