Whitley Warriors are delighted to welcome back versatile Canadian and fan favourite Phil Edgar for the 2024-25 season.
From Kitchener, Ontario, Edgar started out in his hometown’s junior system, icing for the Rangers’ Under 16s and Under 18s sides before progressing to play for Kitchener Dutchmen in the GOJHL in his 2009-10 campaign.
After playing for Kitchener for two further seasons, accumulating a total of 67 points in 87 league games and finishing his 2011-12 season as the side’s top points scorer, Edgar embarked on three seasons in the EOJHL with Ottawa West Golden Knights where he fulfilled the role of alternate captain in his third campaign, contributing 70 goals and a further 67 assists in 111 league games.
A move to Whitley Warriors from the University of Waterloo in 2017 then saw Edgar continue his excellent points production, with 56 points from 34 games in his first season on Tyneside. A productive on-ice relationship with former captain Dean Holland saw the pair terrorise defences around the league. Despite moving back to Canada at the end of the 2022-23 season, Edgar returned to Whitley Bay late last season much to the joy of the Whitley faithful who will be delighted to see he has re-signed.
“I thought I was going to finish out my hockey days in Canada but the Warriors fans are just too fun to play in front of!” Edgar said. “I have a few good years left I reckon and this is the best place to play them out.”
“I’m delighted to have Phil back with us for the full season.” Head Coach Tony Hand said. “We lacked goals in the team at the start of last season and Phil made a large contribution to correcting that at the end of the season. We aim to start the new season on the front foot.”
Welcome back Phil!
