Whitley Warriors are thrilled to announce the signing of highly accomplished left winger Robert Farmer.
After playing for Nottingham Cougars in the Under 16s league from 2002 to 2005, Farmer switched to Sheffield’s junior setup before making the step up into senior ice hockey in his 2006-07 campaign with 30 points in 17 league games for ENL outfit Sheffield Spartans and an EPL appearance for Sheffield Scimitars.
Following this successful season, Farmer signed for the Scimitars in 2007 and he was also called up to Team GB’s Under 18s and Under 20s sides, playing 5 games for both and respectively winning a gold and silver medal at the World Junior Championships whilst registering 5 goals and 7 assists for the Under 18s to record the best plus/minus at the tournament with +13.
In his third season with the Scimitars, Farmer progressed to ice in the Elite League for Sheffield Steelers where he tallied 6 goals and 11 assists in 36 league games, and he also featured for Team GB’s gold-medal-winning Under 20s side at the World Junior Championships before captaining the team to the bronze medal in the following season. The left winger then went on to play for Team GB across ten tournaments, including the outfit’s Olympic Games qualifiers, and twice won silver and gold between 2014 and 2018.
After his initial EIHL campaign for the Steelers, Farmer played a further nine campaigns in the Elite League; two seasons for Coventry Blaze, a season for Braehead Clan and six for Nottingham Panthers whom he left in 2019 for a move to Germany’s DEL 2 side Lausitzer Füchse. Here, he accumulated 35 points in 46 league games in his first season and averaged a point per game in his second campaign.
In consecutive seasons in the EIHL between 2011 and 2013, Farmer achieved the most goals and most points by an Under 23s player. He was also named Young British Player of the Year in his 2011-12 campaign, was crowned Gardiner Conference champion with Braehead Clan in 2013, helped the Panthers twice achieve the EIHL Cup, was crowned Erhardt Conference champion with the side in their 2014-15 campaign and contributed to Nottingham’s Continental Cup success in their 2016-17 season.
Now signing for Whitley Warriors, 30-year-old Farmer, who will wear shirt #91 this season, said today, “I skated with the team in the summer and had a great time. I’m looking forward to joining the Warriors and having some fun.”
“David [Longstaff] and I are delighted to secure Rob for the forthcoming season,” General Manager Paul Matthews informed us. “After moving to the area with his family, Rob started training with us and thoroughly enjoyed it. He mixed with the lads really well and, after discussing his future plans, he has decided to sign for the Warriors. Rob is a player of the highest calibre. He is one of the most humble and honest players I have ever met. David and I are sure the fans will appreciate and welcome Rob with open arms.”
